What is fallback and when is it triggered

Introduction

Premium environments are environments with a so-called fallback for the database. This is a secondary database located in another Availability Zone (AZ) within the same Region. Falling back to this database is a fully automated process.

For Premium Plus environments, the database is additionally replicated to an AZ in a different Region. This process is partially manual and is performed by Mendix.

Details

When the primary database of an environment becomes unavailable, any application instances that are still running will automatically connect to the standby database.

For Premium environments, application instances are automatically distributed across all available AZs once the environment is scaled to a multi-instance setup. This ensures that at least one runtime instance remains available outside the affected AZ.

Mendix guarantees 99.95% uptime only when the database fallback is enabled and the application is running in a multi-instance configuration.

For Premium Plus environments, the regional fallback process is initiated by Mendix.
