How to implement Log Rotation and Storage for Mendix on Kubernetes Applications

Issue

The article provides high-level guidance for implementing automatic storage and rotation of Mendix application logs in case of Mendix On Kubernetes implementations

Environment

Applications hosted in Mendix on Kubernetes

Cause

Mendix follows cloud-native best practices by directing all application logs to stdout and stderr. This approach enables flexible log management using external tools, as Mendix runtime on Kubernetes does not offer built-in application-level log rotation. This design aligns with data protection and security policies, which consider log management outside the core product scope.

Solution/Workaround

To implement automated log storage and rotation for Mendix applications on Kubernetes, follow these steps:

  1. Implement a centralized logging solution as recommended in the Mendix documentation.

  2. Log Collection: Use a log aggregation tool like Grafana to capture logs from your pods

  3. Storage:  Configure automatic upload to an object storage service like S3 for historical log retention

  4. Retention Policy: Setup Cleanup policies to maintain the desired retention period
