Git clone failure with HTTP/2 protocol error when downloading a Mendix project

Issue

When a user tries to download a Mendix project from the Team Server using Studio Pro, the Git clone operation can fail. Studio Pro uses Git to fetch the project files from the Team Server, but the download may stop before completion. During the process, Git may display errors related to HTTP/2, including protocol failures, unexpected disconnects, and early end-of-file messages.
A typical error log looks like this:

Starting cloning
Trying full cloning.
remote: Enumerating objects: 12150, done.
error: RPC failed; curl 92 HTTP/2 stream 5 was not closed cleanly: PROTOCOL_ERROR (err 1)
fetch-pack: unexpected disconnect while reading sideband packet
fatal: early EOF
fatal: fetch-pack: invalid index-pack output
Trying libgit2 cloning.

These errors prevent the project from being fully downloaded to Studio Pro, making it impossible to open or work on the project locally.

Environment

  • Studio Pro v9.12.0 and newer

  • Projects using Git for version control

Cause

Studio Pro v9.12.0 and later offer the option to use Git for version control when projects are stored on the Mendix Team Server. When the end user downloads a project from the Team Server to Studio Pro, Git tries to use HTTP/2 to transfer the project files.

Large projects contain many files or large file sizes, which means a lot of data must be sent over the network. Some Team Server connections, corporate proxies, or firewalls cannot handle such large or long-running HTTP/2 transfers. If the connection is interrupted while Git is downloading the project, the transfer fails. This results in errors such as protocol failures, unexpected disconnects, and early end-of-file messages, preventing the project from being fully downloaded.

Solution / Workaround

Use one of the following approaches to complete the clone successfully.

Force Git to use HTTP/1.1

  1. Open a terminal or command prompt.

  2. Run the following command:

    git config --global http.version HTTP/1.1

This disables HTTP/2 support and forces Git to fall back to HTTP/1.1, which uses a simpler connection method that works reliably for all Team Server and network setups and resolves clone failures caused by HTTP/2 protocol errors.

Always check with the IT team or system administrator before changing permissions on these folders. Incorrect permissions can affect system security or other applications.

Perform a partial clone

A partial clone  reduces the size of the downloaded packfile by excluding file contents (blobs) during the initial clone. This lowers the amount of data sent over the HTTP connection.

  1. Open a terminal or command prompt.

  2. Run the following command, replacing project-url with the Mendix project repository URL:

    git clone --filter=blob:none https://pat:[INSERT PAT HERE]@git.api.mendix.com/[PROJECT ID].git

This reduces network load during the clone and avoids protocol issues triggered by large Git packfile transfers.
