Enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in a non-production environment

Issue

By default, only the Production environment provisioned upon the node creation is set with the Production flag and, therefore, it is the only environment with the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) enabled.

In some cases, it is necessary to enable the MFA in another environment, whether because a new "Production" environment was added to the node or because the Acceptance environment has sensitive information and it requires having the MFA enabled as a security measure.

Environment

Applications hosted in Mendix Cloud

Cause

It is possible to enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in an environment by setting the environment with a Production flag. This can only be performed when creating an environment.

Only environments with Flexible Environments are viable for this process, as only these can have more than one Production environment, as a rule.

Solution/Workaround

To add MFA to a pre-existing environment, it is necessary to recreate the environment. This can be done by offboarding the environment and adding a new environment with the same stats and the Production flag enabled. Please note that once an environment has been offboarded, it is no longer possible to access the (back-ups of the) data.

This can be achieved by opening a ticket with Mendix Support through the Support Portal.
