Errors in expression editors when using quotes in Mendix Studio Pro for Mac (Smart Quotes)

Issue

In the Studio Pro for Mac (beta), incomplete or incorrect errors appear in the Create Variable expression editor when using single or double quotes, as shown in the screenshots below:

Environment

Mendix Studio Pro for Mac (Beta) v10.18.0 and lower

Cause

The Smart Quotes feature in MacOS automatically replaces straight quotes with curly quotes (as mentioned in the Replace text and punctuation in documents on Mac documentation). The resultant strings are invalid and cannot be interpreted in the expression editor.

Solution/Workaround

To resolve this issue, upgrade to Studio Pro v10.18.1 or newer (latest LTS version recommended).

If it is not possible to upgrade Studio Pro, disable the Smart Quotes feature manually by following the steps mentioned in the Use smart quotes and dashes section of the documentation mentioned above:

  1. Open System Preferences:
    • Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
    • Select System Preferences.
  2. Navigate to Keyboard Settings:
    • In the System Preferences window, click Keyboard.
  3. Disable Smart Quotes:
    • Navigate to Text Input and click Edit.
    • Uncheck the box next to Use smart quotes and dashes.
